This YouTube thumbnail downloader saves the cover image of any public YouTube video. Paste a video link or its 11-character ID, press Get Thumbnails and you will see every size available for that video, largest first, from HD down to small previews, each labeled with its width and height. Click Download this size to save the one you want. It is free, with no sign up and nothing to install.
Only the thumbnail image is downloaded, never the video. Thumbnails are great for reference, notes and design research, but they belong to the creator, so ask before you republish one. To make your own thumbnail instead, try the AI YouTube Thumbnail Generator, and to keep the content of a video, use YouTube to Notes or the YouTube Transcript Generator.
Copy the link from the address bar or the Share button. Watch links, youtu.be short links, embed links and plain 11-character IDs all work.
Press Get Thumbnails. The video title appears with a preview of every available size, largest first, with its width and height.
Click Download this size under the image you want. It saves to your device with the video ID and size in the file name.

Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images in different sizes. This tool looks the video up and lists the sizes that exist for it, largest first, with the exact width and height under each preview. Typical sizes are:
Not every video has every size. Older videos and some uploads do not have an HD version, so the largest option may be smaller. Always check the size label before you download. Some older 4:3 sizes can include black bars above and below the picture. If you only need part of the image, trim it with Crop Image or scale it with the image resizer.
Which size should you pick? For slides, documents and design reference, take the largest one. For a small preview in a table, a list of links or study notes, a medium size keeps files light. If you need an exact size, download the largest version and scale it down with the image resizer rather than enlarging a small one.
The downloader reads the 11-character video ID from the link you paste. These formats work:
For a YouTube Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/...), copy the 11-character ID at the end of the link and paste just the ID. If a watch link has other parameters before v=, such as a playlist, paste the ID on its own as well. Private and removed videos cannot be looked up.
When you press Get Thumbnails, RegiAI looks up the video, returns its title and the list of thumbnail images, and your browser shows them. When you click Download this size, the image is saved from your browser with the video ID and dimensions in the file name, so it is easy to find later.
On a phone, the YouTube app's Share button gives you a youtu.be link, which works as it is. On a computer, copy the address from the browser bar while the video is playing. Extra parameters after the ID, such as a timestamp, are ignored.
A thumbnail is part of the creator's work and is protected by copyright like the video itself. Downloading one for personal reference, study notes or research is common. Republishing it, using it in ads, or putting it on products is different, and you should get the creator's permission first.
If you need a thumbnail for your own video, design an original one. The AI YouTube Thumbnail Generator creates a new 16:9 thumbnail from a description, and the free Background Remover helps you cut yourself out of a photo to put in front of a bold background. Want to understand what a video covers before you reference it? YouTube to Notes turns it into structured notes.
Creators can also use this tool on their own videos: grab the current thumbnail before replacing it, compare two versions side by side, or reuse the artwork in a community post or channel banner.
If you run a channel, a folder of your own past thumbnails is a useful reference when you plan new designs: you can see which styles, colors and faces you have used and keep your channel consistent.
