This GIF to PNG converter saves GIF images as PNG files, keeping any transparent background. Use it for old logos, icons, clip art and diagrams stored as GIF, or to grab a still image from an animated GIF. For animated files, it saves the first frame.
It runs in your browser, free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Want to put a face into a GIF instead? Try GIF Face Swap. For photo-like stills, PNG to JPG makes a smaller file afterwards, and PNG to WebP is a good next step for web use.
Drop up to 10 .gif files or click Add Files. Static and animated GIFs both work.
PNG is preselected and keeps transparent areas. Nothing else to set.
Press Convert and download each PNG. Animated GIFs produce one PNG of the first frame.

Save the opening frame of an animated GIF as a thumbnail or preview image.
Many editors handle PNG better than GIF, especially for layers, colour changes and transparency.
Use a still PNG where an animation would distract, such as printed handouts or PDFs.
Old diagrams, maps and line drawings saved as GIF become lossless PNG files.
GIF dates from 1987 and has two limits that PNG removed. First, a GIF can hold only 256 colours per frame, which is why photos saved as GIF look grainy or banded. Second, GIF transparency is on or off for each pixel, so edges on a transparent background look jagged. PNG supports millions of colours and smooth, partial transparency, and it is lossless like GIF.
Converting GIF to PNG gives you a file in a more capable, better supported format, and nothing is lost on the way: every pixel, including transparent ones, is copied exactly. It does not add colours or smooth edges that the GIF never had. A dithered, 256-colour image will look the same as a PNG. If you want to clean up a small or rough graphic, the paid AI Image Upscaler can enlarge it with more detail.
File size can go either way. Simple graphics often end up similar in size; a PNG can be larger because it is saved with full colour. Run it through Compress Image if needed.
PNG, as created here, is a still image format, so an animated GIF cannot stay animated. The converter reads the GIF in your browser and saves the first frame as a PNG. This is handy for thumbnails, previews and article images, but it will not export every frame.
If you need the animation itself, keep the GIF. For web pages, short animations are usually better served as video, which is far smaller than GIF.
A few practical tips:
GIF is long past its prime for still images, but it hangs on in places: email signatures and newsletters, logos on older company sites, forum avatars and badges, clip art collections, and of course reaction GIFs. Converting the still ones to PNG makes them easier to reuse in modern tools.
Because this converter saves the first frame of an animated GIF, it helps to know how to get a different moment:
Need the colours of an old logo for a redesign? Run the PNG through Color Palette from Image to pull out its exact hex values.
