Quick access to the most commonly used image format conversions

This AVIF to PNG converter turns .avif images into lossless PNG files that work in every editor, design tool and upload form, and it keeps transparent backgrounds. It is the right choice for logos, stickers, icons, screenshots and any AVIF you want to keep editing.

The PNG is created in your browser, free, with no sign-up and no watermark. For photos where a smaller file matters more, AVIF to JPG is lighter. To create AVIF files from your own PNGs, use PNG to AVIF.

How to use AVIF to PNG Converter

  1. 1

    Add AVIF images

Click Add Files or drop up to 10 .avif files. A current browser is needed to read them.

  2. 2

    Keep PNG as the output

PNG is selected by default and keeps transparency. Switch to JPG if you only need a small photo.

  3. 3

    Convert and download

Press Convert, then download each PNG. File names stay the same with a .png ending.

What you can make

Transparent logos and stickers

Logos and cut-outs saved from websites as AVIF keep their transparent background as PNG.

Design tools

Bring images into design and illustration apps that do not import AVIF yet.

Editing and overlays

Add text, crop or retouch the PNG without adding compression loss on each save.

Presentations

PNG drops into PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides, transparency included.

Upload requirements

Forms, stores and platforms that only accept PNG or JPG will take the converted file.

Screenshots with text

PNG keeps text and sharp lines exactly as they look in the AVIF, without new artifacts.

AVIF vs PNG: when to convert

AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats on the web. It keeps files small, supports transparency and handles gradients well, which is why many sites and CDNs now serve it automatically. The catch is that it is still young outside the browser. Many image editors, office apps, older operating systems and upload forms do not accept .avif files.

PNG is the safest choice when you need to keep transparency or edit the image further. It is lossless, so the PNG is an exact copy of what the AVIF displays, and every later save keeps it that way. That makes it ideal for logos, icons, UI graphics, illustrations and screenshots.

For ordinary photos without transparency, PNG is usually overkill. The file can easily be ten times the size of the AVIF. In that case AVIF to JPG gives a compatible file at a fraction of the size.

Details: transparency, size and browser support

  • Transparency: both formats have an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels carry over exactly, including soft shadows.
  • File size: expect the PNG to be much larger than the AVIF. That is the cost of lossless storage, not a problem with the conversion. Compress Image or Resize Image can bring it down.
  • Quality: the PNG reproduces the AVIF exactly, but cannot restore detail lost when the AVIF was made. For low-resolution images, the paid AI Image Upscaler can help.
  • Animation and HDR: animated AVIF files become a still PNG of the first frame, and HDR images are saved in standard range.
  • Browser support: the conversion runs locally, so your browser must be able to read AVIF. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ all can. Nothing is uploaded.

What to do with the PNG next

A PNG is a great working format, but often not the final one. Common next steps:

  • Edit and retouch in any editor, then keep the PNG as your master copy.
  • Remove a background from a photo with the Background Remover to get a clean transparent cut-out.
  • Crop or rotate with Crop Image and Rotate Image.
  • Add a logo or watermark with the Watermark Maker before sharing.
  • Publish it again on the web as WebP or AVIF, which keeps transparency at a much smaller size.

Choosing the output in the first place:

  • PNG: transparency, graphics, text, editing.
  • JPG: photos to share, print or upload, smallest compatible file.
  • WebP: photos or graphics going back onto a website.

How do I convert AVIF to PNG?

Add your AVIF files, keep PNG as the output and press Convert. Download each PNG from the list.

Does AVIF to PNG keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent, because PNG supports an alpha channel just like AVIF.

Is the AVIF to PNG converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

Is any quality lost converting AVIF to PNG?

No. PNG is lossless, so it matches the AVIF exactly. Existing compression artifacts in the AVIF remain.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

AVIF uses very efficient lossy compression; PNG stores every pixel losslessly. A PNG several times larger than the AVIF is normal.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the AVIF and writes the PNG locally, so the images never leave your device.

I get "Failed to load image". What now?

Your browser cannot read that AVIF. Update to a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari 16+, or check that the file is not damaged.

Should I choose PNG or JPG?

PNG for transparency, graphics, text and editing. JPG for photos where a small, widely compatible file matters most.

What happens to animated AVIF?

Only the first frame is converted. PNG output here is a still image.

Can I open AVIF files in Photoshop?

Recent versions can, older ones cannot. Converting to PNG is the simple workaround.

How many files can I convert at a time?

Up to 10 per batch, each downloaded separately.

Does it change image size?

No. The PNG keeps the same pixel dimensions as the AVIF.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG on Mac?

Yes. The converter runs in Safari, Chrome and Firefox on macOS. Safari needs to be version 16 or later to read AVIF.

Is AVIF to PNG better than AVIF to JPG?

For transparency, graphics and editing, yes. For photos you just want to share, AVIF to JPG gives a much smaller file.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit, since your browser does the work. Very large images can be slow on phones and older computers.
