Blur changes appear here in real time.

Blur image files in your browser with two effects: a soft Gaussian blur or a directional motion blur. Drag the intensity slider from 1 to 20 pixels, set the motion direction if you want movement, and watch the preview update as you go. Download the blurred photo at its full original size. There is no upload, sign up or watermark.

A blurred photo makes a calm background for text, slides and wallpapers, and motion blur adds a sense of speed. This tool blurs the whole image. To keep a person sharp while hiding the background, cut them out with the Background Remover and place them over a blurred copy. Going the other way and fixing a blurry photo needs AI: try AI Image Unblur.

What you can make

Soft backgrounds

Blur a photo to use behind text on slides, posters, banners and wallpapers.

Motion effects

Give cars, runners and sports shots a directional streak that suggests movement.

Thumbnails and covers

Create a blurred backdrop so titles and cutouts stand out.

Presentation backgrounds

Turn any photo into a subtle full-screen background for a title slide.

Dreamy photo look

Soften portraits and landscapes for an out-of-focus, atmospheric style.

Private by design

The blur is applied in your browser, so your photo is never uploaded.

Gaussian blur vs motion blur

The tool has two blur types, and each gives a different look:

  • Gaussian blur spreads every pixel evenly in all directions. It gives the soft, out-of-focus look you see in background photos and frosted-glass designs. Low values (1 to 4 px) take the edge off; higher values turn shapes into smooth color fields.
  • Motion blur layers several faint, shifted copies of the image along one direction, giving a streaked look that suggests movement. Set the direction slider to match it: 0° streaks horizontally, 90° vertically, and anything in between gives a diagonal. The effect is lighter than a Gaussian blur at the same setting and shows best on smaller images.

The preview updates as soon as you move a slider, so you can try both types and several strengths before you download. Switching type keeps your intensity setting.

Blur works on any photo, but the effect is easiest to judge on the full-size download rather than the scaled preview. If you plan to use the result at a small size, such as a thumbnail, remember that shrinking an image also makes the blur look weaker.

Getting the blur strength right

The intensity is measured in pixels of the original image, and the blur is applied at full resolution. That matters: a 10 px blur looks strong on a small 800-pixel image but much subtler on a 4000-pixel phone photo, even if the on-screen preview is scaled down.

  • For a heavier blur on a large photo, first make it smaller with the image resizer (for example to 1200 pixels wide), then blur it. You will get a stronger effect and a lighter file.
  • For a background behind text, a Gaussian blur of 8 to 15 px on a web-sized image usually works well.
  • For motion effects, start near the top of the slider, since motion blur is subtler, and adjust the direction to follow your subject.

The downloaded file keeps your original name with _blurred added. If it is larger than you need, run it through Compress Image.

Gaussian blur also softens noise and grain, so a light 1 to 3 px blur can make a grainy low-light photo look smoother when it is used small, for example as a background tile. It will not recover detail, though; for a photo that needs to look sharper, try the AI Image Upscaler.

Blurring for privacy

People often blur screenshots to hide names, faces or account numbers before sharing. This tool applies the blur to the entire image, so it is not designed to hide just one area while keeping the rest sharp. For that kind of redaction, crop the sensitive part out with Crop Image or cover it with a solid box in an image editor. A solid cover is more reliable than a light blur, which can leave text readable.

If you want to mark photos as yours rather than hide details, stamp them with the free Watermark Maker.

Blurring can also help when a photo is too busy to sit behind text. A lightly blurred background photo keeps its colors and mood but stops competing with your headline, which is why it is popular for slide backgrounds, quote graphics and event banners. For the colors of the photo as HEX codes, use Color Palette From Image to match your text to the picture.

Everything runs in your browser using the canvas, so nothing is uploaded and there is no size limit set by RegiAI. Very large images may take a moment longer to update the preview on older phones.

How do I blur an image?

Choose an image, pick Gaussian or Motion blur, drag the intensity slider until the preview looks right and press Download Blurred Image.

Is this blur tool free?

Yes. It is free with no sign up, no watermark and no limit.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The blur is applied in your browser, so your image never leaves your device.

What is the difference between Gaussian and motion blur?

Gaussian blur softens evenly in every direction, like an out-of-focus lens. Motion blur streaks the image in one direction, like movement during a long exposure.

How strong can the blur be?

The intensity goes from 1 to 20 pixels. On very large photos, resize the image down first for a stronger effect.

Can I blur only part of an image, like a face?

No. This tool blurs the whole image. To hide a detail, crop it out or cover it in an image editor.

How do I blur the background but keep the person sharp?

Blur a copy of the photo here, cut the person out with the Background Remover, then place the cutout on top of the blurred copy in any editor.

Does the download keep the original resolution?

Yes. The blur is applied to the full-size image, not to the smaller preview.

Which formats can I blur?

JPG, PNG and WebP work well. For iPhone HEIC photos, use the HEIC to JPG converter first.

Can I unblur a photo here?

No. Removing blur needs AI. Use AI Image Unblur or the AI Image Upscaler.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. You can blur images in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android.

Can I blur a photo for a background behind text?

Yes. A Gaussian blur of around 8 to 15 px on a web-sized photo keeps the colors but makes text on top much easier to read.

What format is the download?

The blurred image is saved from the browser canvas as PNG data, with _blurred added to your file name. Compress it afterwards if you need a smaller file.

Does blurring hide text completely?

Not always. A light blur can leave text readable, which is why cropping or covering is safer for sensitive information.
