This PNG to AVIF converter shrinks heavy PNG images into AVIF files for the web, and keeps transparent backgrounds. Large PNG illustrations, renders and cut-out product photos are where AVIF saves the most: files can drop to a small fraction of the original size.
It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. AVIF is best for images you publish on a website. For broader app support, PNG to WebP also keeps transparency, and for photos without transparency you could use PNG to JPG. To turn AVIF back into PNG, use AVIF to PNG.
Drop up to 10 PNGs, up to 20 MB each. Transparent images are fine.
AVIF is the preset output. The files are sent to our server, which encodes them as AVIF.
Press Convert, wait a few seconds per image while AVIF encodes, then download each file.

Large PNG illustrations and banners are often the heaviest files on a page. AVIF cuts them down.
3D renders, digital paintings and AI images saved as PNG compress very well as AVIF.
Convert PNG screens and illustrations used in onboarding, docs and marketing pages.
Help centres with many full-width PNG screenshots load faster with AVIF.
Smaller images mean less data served per visit, which matters on high-traffic pages.
PNG is lossless. That is perfect for editing, but it makes photos, renders and detailed illustrations very large, often several megabytes each. AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec, and it compresses images far more efficiently, while also supporting an alpha channel for transparency.
The size gap between PNG and AVIF is much bigger than between JPG and AVIF, because you are going from lossless to efficient lossy compression. For photographic or painted PNGs, reductions of 80 to 95 percent are common. Transparent images keep their soft edges and shadows.
The converter encodes at quality 85 on the AVIF scale, which is a high setting aimed at results that look like the PNG at normal viewing size. Flat graphics with sharp edges, such as UI screenshots or diagrams, save less and may show slight softening around fine text if you zoom in. For those, compare the result with WebP or keep the PNG. Resizing oversized images first with Resize Image adds further savings.
AVIF displays in current Chrome, Firefox, Safari (version 16 onwards) and Edge (since early 2024), so it is safe to use on most websites. For very old browsers, a picture element with a PNG or WebP fallback covers everyone. Outside the browser, support is still uneven: many image viewers, editors, office programs and email clients cannot open AVIF, so keep your PNG originals as editable masters.
Most browsers can display AVIF but cannot create it. For that reason this conversion runs on our server: each PNG is sent to RegiAI, encoded to AVIF, and the result comes straight back to your browser for download. Files can be up to 20 MB each. If you would rather keep everything on your device, PNG to WebP is created in the browser in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and still gives large savings.
AVIF is excellent for images on web pages, but a PNG is still the better file in several cases:
A good rule is PNG for sources and AVIF for what your visitors download. Cutting out a product photo first? Use the Background Remover, then convert its PNG output here for a small transparent AVIF.
